PROVINCE OF ITALY
“Beata Vergine DEL ROSARIO”
The presence of the Congregation in Italy dates back to 1862, when Mother Gérine sent the first three sisters to Civitanova Marche (MC), in response to a request from Emperor Napoleon III.
Within a few years, other communities were established in the cities of Ascoli Piceno, Bologna, Genoa, Florence and Turin. Everywhere, the sisters were involved in caring for the sick and in the education of boys and girls.
When in the 1879 Mother Gérine resigned from her role as leader of the Congregation, the Italian communities were not involved in the election of the new Mother General. This led to such a deep division that, in 1882, the communities in Italy constituted themselves as an autonomous Congregation.
Thus, two “sister Congregations” came into being, each following its own path of development and establishing communities throughout the world, while continuing to live the charism of Mother Gérine and maintaining bonds of life and fraternity rooted in their common origin and their one Foundress
When Mother Gérine died in Carcassonne, on 31 December 1887, the Italian Congregation was stably organized and had established its Motherhouse in Rome.
The current Province “Beata Vergine del Rosario” in Italy, established in 2003, is now made up of various communities present on Italian territory; from northern to southern Italy the sisters live the mission entrusted to them in different ways:
– in Vigevano, Bologna, Livorno, Peccioli (PI), Fiano Romano (RM), trought schools of all levels;
– in Genoa Quinto trough CEAS and CEDIS, a residential and day educational community offering support and care to minors in situations of temporary abandonment and/or serious family difficulties as well as through a Housing Emergency Project;
– in Naples – in the Quartieri spagnoli – through social, educational and assistance activities for minors and families at risk of social exclusion;
– in Rome and Venice through nursing care and assistance for the elderly and for sick sisters:
– in particular, in Milan and Francavilla sul Sinni (PZ), where the communities are totally dedicated to the proclamation of the Gospel through service to the parish and diocese in which they are inserted.
Each community, according to the specific competencies of its sister, is available to proclaim the Word of God through meetings, retreats and programs of human and spiritual formation for children, young people and families.
The communities – houses of preaching – , are also open to welcome small and large groups who wish to experience school camps, retreats and formative activities; as well as individuals seeking spiritual accompaniment or times of prayer, silence, community life, and volunteer service.
Sharing in the charism of Mother Gérine through educational action and support for the lives of the most fragile and needy are also: Fondazione Madre Gérine Fabre, Fondazione Sant’Alberto Magno, Cooperativa Santa Caterina da Siena, Associazione Efraim, APS Meglio che niente.
