DELEGATION OF NIGERIA
“OUR LADY SEAT OF WISDOM”
The “Our Lady Seat of Wisdom” Delegation of Nigeria was established in January 2006 and today it is made up of 8 communities, including the community of the International Novitiate of Africa. Although part of the Delegation, the latter depends directly on the General Government for all aspects relating to its formative task.
Our presence in Nigeria was born from the evangelical desire of the sisters to bring the light of the Gospel to the African continent, as well as in response to an invitation made by the Pro-Nuncio to Nigeria, His Excellency Archbishop Paul Tabet, who asked the sisters to work at the Apostolic Nunciature.
Accordingly, on 18 November 1988, three sisters, Sr. Imelda Fortuna, Sr. Laura Grigis, and Sr. Margaret Hussain, arrived in Lagos, Nigeria and immediately began their service at the Nunciature under a two-year contract.
In 1991, upon the conclusion of their contract with the Nuncio, and with the support of the Dominican friars, the sisters moved to the parish of St Jude in Mafoluku, Oshodi, where they opened their first community. They began their mission by initially embracing the apostolate of women’s empowerment through the teaching of home economics. In 1992, they expanded their service to education, working in a Dominican nursery and primary school, as well as in parish ministry.
Like a mustard seed that grows into a great tree, the Congregation in Nigeria continued to flourish and spread to different places with the opening of new communities dedicated to education, health care and the liturgical arts.
Through the witness of the sisters’ lives, the desire of Mother Gérine to “show the maternal face of God to disfigured humanity” – even today – continues to be faithfully realized.
